Virus Protection Out of Date
« on: July 20, 2009, 03:24:57 PM »
I have Windows Professional OS 64 Bit Edition [/b] and the only Virus Protection I can have that I know of is Avast -- Norton is not compatible to my knowledge.  I updated my avast virus protection for a year but my windows security center says my virus protection is out of date.  Avast used to update automatically but it is not doing so now.  How do I update virus protection?

Is the time and date correct? (most common thing)

You say a year, so is the license key expired?

My time was indeed incorrect.  I fixed it and I will wait and see if the virus update happens -- I have found that in the past it takes a little while.

Thanks for your help.

I see you are from the UK -- I love all things British.

No problem, glad to help :)

Usually it is not avast being out of date (it usually updates regardless) but actually windows security center reporting it out of date because of the time difference, it thinks it is out of date.

You can check if you have the current VPS update:

right click avast tray icon --> click about avast --> expand 'VPS file'

The current version is 090719-1

I show to have 090707-0.  Is there a way I can manually update the virus protection and do you know why it is not automatically updating?  I recently moved from California to the Midwest and this computer was turned off for about two months-- I don't know if that makes a difference.  The automatic update does not seem to be working.

Thanks.

Odd, it should have updated...maybe avast does use the time on the pc then...(maybe some input from someone who knows???)
that vps file is for about 2 weeks ago

To manually update:

right click avast icon --> updating -->iAVS update

I did the automatic update several times but when I go to "About Avast" and open the VPS file it still shows 090707-0.  The one that I update shows the correct one that you indicated above but it does not seem to be updating.  The VPS file shows a compilation date of 07/07/2009 -- could that be the problem?

So to summarize -- I update the correct file manually but it does not show up in the VPS file in "About Avast".

Please help.

Thanks

Can you try a repair of avast?

start-->control panel-->add/remove programs -->avast antivirus --> click remove --> scroll down and click repair
