Help with updates, please
« on: July 23, 2009, 11:02:33 PM »
Hi, I've got the Avast! 4.8 Home edition because my boyfriend has also got it, but I have got a problem with the updates. My Avast NEVER updates (my boyfriend's always does but there's nothing different), it doesn't update even when I click to update the virus database or to update the program. Never.
I tried to download the "VpsUpd.exe, avast! version 4.8", but it doesn't let me to install it, it gives this error:

Please, I need urgent help with the updates, because I think my computer's got a virus but I can't delete it!! What can I do??
Thank you so much.

Hello Vitis,

The program version is out of date, the current one is 4.8.1335

Since you said you cannot update the program through avast itself, try downloading and installing the most recent version from the avast website:

http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

Scroll down to the relevant language for you and click download.

It seems, from searching the forum, that the installation is messed up...

Did you have any previous AV?
If so, how was it removed?

You could try a complete re-install of avast:

*** It is a good idea to download the newest version of avast before starting this***

I suggest an installation from the scratch:
1.Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
2. Boot.
3. Download the latest version of Avast Uninstall and use it for complete uninstallation. Maybe you should boot in Safe Mode.
4. Boot.
5. Install again the latest avast! version.
6. Boot.
7. Check and post the results.

Very important to uninstall any previous AV, also. And to run the applicable removal tool. (AVG have one. Norton have one. etc.)

Why do you think your computer has a virus?
Try downloading, installing, updating and scanning with MBAM, post the scan results.
Windows 10,Windows Firewall,Firefox w/Adblock.

If you want a completely clean installation, it's not a bad idea to search all files and folders after you uninstall for traces left behind and delete them. I don't know how well Avast uninstalls but some programs leave profiles behind and will automatically incorporate them into your brand new install. This can cause unwanted results.

Hi avast_ng00,

Please could you start a new thread for you problem, as your problem seems unrelated and could cause confusion later on.
