another spyware program question..
« on: August 09, 2009, 06:08:09 PM »
wanted some advice, but didnt want to hijack the other thread lol

I loaded avast! a week ago, everything is fine(knock on wood)....im running windows vista basic, service pack 2, with windows firewall and defender.....on a compaq laptop

Ive been reading the  forum threads alot, to try to get handle on things, being a newbie, and ive noticed superantispyware and malwarebytes mentioned numerous times.

now as the saying goes, an ounce of prevention is a pound of cure, but going overboard can kill lol, so I dont want to go overboard...

my question is this, if i  do decide to get these two programs, do i leave defender on? and just use the superantispyware and malware as demand scanning tools and not real time protection? ive read somewhere that the free of malwarebytes isnt offered as real time protecton anyways, only the paid version, I cant find the same information for superantispyware, so Im guessing the free version does over real time protection?

2nd question is, would these two interfere with defender?
thank you all for any advice given

The free versions are on-demand only so shouldn't interfere with your other applications.

I have never used windows defender, never saw the need and I don't really rate it that much from what others report, it does however, give limited resident protection.

avast include within its normal process anti-spyware so there is an element of resident anti-spyware there. I have both SAS and MBAM, I have the paid option of SAS Pro that has resident protection, whilst I use MBAM as an on-demand scanner only.

I re-installed SAS free version on a computer recently and I'm certain it asked to start up with the operating system - as reseident I presume. I can't remember whether I okayed or not. But SAS free  may likely have resident protection as well.

It needs to have the service started if you intend to use the right click context menu scan done. If you don't want that option you can change it in the Control Center (Preferences/Options, General and Startup tab) Start-up Options section.

sorry, I did not install, I updated SAS on a computer that had been idle for a few months.

I now found the SAS help file - resident protection for pro edition only. Thanks again.
