Any Free Photo Editors?
« on: August 22, 2009, 01:34:40 AM »
Does anyone know of a freeware photo editor like Macromedia Fireworks or Photoshop? I want something like Fireworks but I can't shell out hundreds of dollars for it.

Hi BRANDONN2008

This is my favourite  http://www.faststone.org/

More of a viewer / editor than a photoshop / editor but I usual only need lightweight edit.
Avast7 Free, MBAM (on demand), MVPS Hosts

Intel DG41TY, Windows 7 Ultimate, IE9, Google Chrome, 4 GB ram, Secunia PSI, ccleaner, Foxit Reader, Faststone Image viewer, MWSnap.

I think I might check out GIMP since I want something for major editing like clipping heads and putting it on different bodies, and carefully clipping out specific things, idk.

I downloaded the Windows version of GIMP, it seems a lot like Fireworks but seems to hog my CPU. I checked my task manager while I tried to clip something on the picture and it spiked to like 80%. Maybe I downloaded wrong one?

I don't think so.  Image editors use a lot of processing power.  If you downloaded the wrong one, it just plain wouldn't work.

However, there could be a bug, but I'd say that it's safe to say that you might just have an aging computer or a weak video card, and it's just how it works out.

Digital editing needs a powerful computer.

You could try adding memory to your computer (find out what kind by visiting crucial.com or better yet, newegg.com) or upgrading your computer.

The cheapest option usually is to add memory.  A faster processor can't hurt either though.

He didn't say memory.

But I don't agree anyway, if you have a few 8 MP images open at the same time, and you start working with several layers for each, it's going to each up CPU and Memory.

Imaging programs aren't really tailored to low-end budget systems, especially for doing any sort of professional image work.

If you're making a small avatar or something like editing the red-eye out of a photo, it shouldn't be causing much of a problem.  However, if you're working with large RAW Photos, or jpegs right off of your point and shoot or SLR camera, try compressing the 5, 6, 7, 8, etc.  MB image into something a little smaller before editing it.

Or, get a faster computer.

Mac's do this sort of thing very well also, that's what they're made for.

Paint.NET. Some will hate it just because it's using .NET framework, but once you start using it, you'll not going to use anything else.

I think RejZoR was talking about this one:
