Problem with ashserv.exe
« on: May 30, 2004, 12:52:51 AM »
Hi.

I have been using Avast for quite a while now and have noticed just today that when my PC remains on, and leaving Avast on, the CPU Usage for ashserv.exe shoots up to 100% and my computer gets really slow. What can I do?

To answer the questions on the Avast homepage:

I am using Windows XP Professional.
My Avast is 4.1.396.
My CPS file is 0244-1, 27/05/2004.
My PC is an Athlon 2400+ with 1024DDR Ram.
I connect to the internet using a 600k Broadband Modem.
I do tend to use Outlook Express occasionally, never the program though, just through a website.
I use ZoneAlarm Pro as my Firewall.
The error occurs randomly, not sure when and how it started.
I receive no error messages, just a very slow system and 100% CPU usage.

If anyone could advise me, that'd be great.

Hello! Don't worry,we're the fastest here :)

For start try to use HouseCall online scanner to doublecheck the system. You can find it on my webpage. Also are you using any Bittorrent program at the time when this happens?

I was actually, yeah. I was using Burst RC5 and downloading a torrent. But I've done this many a time before and haven't found this problem yet.

I'll use HouseCall online scanner now.

I noticed that sometimes the P2P provider uses enormous amounts of CPU time and memory when using some bittorrent program. I think its due to small file chunk size and high speeds.
Try disabling protection for Bittorrent in P2P provider.
They'll be scanned by Standard Shield when you unpack downloaded files,so you wont risk anything.

Oh right, thanks a lot. Much appreciated. The only thing that was bothering me was that it's just started happening recently!

HouseCall gave me the all clear aside from one joke virus.
