cannot dismiss virus alert window
« on: May 30, 2004, 11:58:38 PM »
Hi,

As you can see I'm new to this forum because with Search I have found almost everything I need to fully enjoy this great freeware antivirus tool! Almost everything... Because I have a problem I cannot get by.

Like a lot of people I do not need to be notified if Avast! founds a virus in my mail. I trust it to remove it and protect me. :) I read several of these questions and the answers: send to Chest ('Silente Mode' and default answer 'No'). Did this but the windows (and siren!) remains.

But where do I say: "send to Chest"? Maybe I forget it somewhere...

The alert window remains coming, even after repairing (in add/remove programs). Does anyone has an idea?

Thanks in advance,

If you select Silent Mode you won't see that window. Uncheck it and you will receive a warning with the option 'Send to Chest'.

Can you empty your browser cache? (temporary internet files)
Why don't you schedule a boot time scanning?
Which file (name and path) is being infected by what (name of the virus)?

I did select it and I still get the alert window. Just unchecked it and the same window appeared. Also with the option to send it to the chest. Clicked and tried it afterwards but still the alert window is coming...

Emptied browser cache -> no effect; did not schedule a boot scan but did a full system scan (thorough!) a few hours ago after a fresh install of WinXP and Avast a few days ago - do I still need a boot scan?; and the problem is (amongst others) the EICAR-testfile....

Thank you for the help, Technical but do you have more ideas?

Remember, that isn't a virus but, it's designed to get a rise out of Avast.

Bob is right as usual...  :D
If the file is EICAR maybe you have a 'loop' of detection and deletion of the file. Where is the infected file (name and path)?
It's not a matter of boot scanning or nor. You do not have to do a scan on boot but as you have a problem, I just want you get rid from it  ;)

Please, open the Chest and report any 'infected' file (the system backup files are not infected, they were there for security reasons).

The picture wouldn't attach...
[What is the problem with the Attach function when you're replying??? I select a file, it transfers it but it's not showing...]

Why don't you clean your Chest folder?
You can select the files, right click and choose 'Delete'...
Will this solve your problem?

Nope. Deleted them, send myself the eicar.com test file and the siren rings again...

Mmm... Why?

Have you read the avast help file, windows start>programs>avast>help 'Resident Protection - Standard Shield - Advanced Page' and the 'Internet Mail Provider Settings - Advanced Page?'

A crib from the internet mail provider advanced page.

"Silent" mode. It is useful mainly for server operating systems. This option ensures that the resident protection will not require any user interaction and will not display any windows. For this reason, it is not recommended to set "choose action" on the Virus page in silent mode, because the interactive action choice requires user interaction of course. It is better to preset some particular action, such as deleting the file or moving it to Chest.

Please understand that the file you are sending to yourself acts the same way a real virus acts (even though it is not really a virus).  You should be worried if the siren DID NOT go of.
All it is telling you is that Avast! IS Working. !!!!!!!

Yes, I did. But on both tabs I have Silent Mode enabled with No. I did and I do and the alarm windows still alerts!

Do I have to uninstall and install again, for example?

Not quite; I asked what to do if the alert window is still coming...
But DavidR, Thanks for the help and do you have more ideas?

TIA,
Mike

True, Bob - as Technical put it: as usual. But that wasn't my problem. I know what EICAR does and what the test file is. That's why I use it. And, as I said, I trust Avast to do his job but I don't want to be informed about it. THAT's my problem...

Apparently the normal way isn't working, so what's wrong here?

@mikelke
I changed the settings in my Internet Mail provider and changed the advanced to silent mode and some things happened that I thought strange.

I sent myself a test virus and it didn't open the window to select what to do with it, but it did sound the alarm (I usually have my speakers switched off, but turned them on for this exercise).

I tried again using different options in silent mode of 'with general answer No (cancel)' and 'with general answer Yes (ok).'

I have to admit after that I am more confused now as there didn't seem to be a consistancy. Sometimes not getting a warning/alarm but having the additional info displayed across the bottom of the screen and the emails/downloads allowed through but subject lines changed.

To my mind silent mode should not only kill the options window but also the alarm.

I would try the repair first, add remove avast and select change. You will need to be on-line for this. Some how or other I feel that an uninstall and reinstall will have little effect but it wouldn't hurt.

Has anyone using Avast 4 Home successfully switched Internet Mail>Customize>Advanced to Silent mode and does it kill the action window and the audio alarm?

If so what are the settings you are using on the advanced settings?

David
