There was a virus: WIN32: Kamso(Trj).
To be sure you're clean, can you schedule a boot-time scanning?
Start avast! > Right click the skin > Schedule a boot-time scanning.
Select for scanning archives.
Boot.
If infected files are found, it's safer to send them to Chest instead of deleting them.
This way you can further analysis them.
Thank's Tech.
I made made the schedule boot-time scanning before your advice and all was OK.
I always made the scanning with archives .
Thank's again

When trying (unsuccessfully) to manually update Avast on educational Pentium III's in Africa that have no access to Internet I have similar error message showing on version 4.8.1351:
SI : 0x00000005
ST : 0x00000003
LE : 0x0000000
Any clues? USB keys from virus-ridden cybercafés are normally used in these machines but HDDs scan clean under last update (24 Aug).

Error 5 means access denied.
Is there any software that could be blocking avast update?
Are you logged as an administrator?

Error first incurred when student helper tried on non-administrator account and reading forums suggested that plus maybe our version was out of date. So we uploaded the latest French version and redid everything on the Administrator account, which still gave the results listed. Can't find any other antivirus program on Control Panel, and we reinstalled everything recently from scratch so Avast was the only one installed.

Well, looks like we'll have to go back to AVG then - pity, but if Avast won't work we need something to protect our machines against the viruses coming out of the local African cyber cafés with no protection on to our students' USB drives.

You need avast Pro (or AVG paid).

I can't really follow your mind, what is exactly occurring in your computer?
