Optionally start avast?
« on: October 05, 2009, 11:32:19 PM »
*** SORRY - STUPID new user as I posted this in the wrong forum! ****

I would like to sometimes start Avast, and sometimes not. I do a lot of work on one of my machines and I only connect it to the Internet every 2-3 weeks. When I start up the computer I can ask myself the question of whether I want to run
C:\PROGRA~1\Avast4\ashDisp.exe but
when I try to make the change to the registry in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
to prevent ashDisp.exe from running, I get "cannot write changes" errors.

How can I control if I want to start the program?

Internet is not the only time you have to be worried. using flash drives can also be dangerous. you can temporarily disable avast by right clicking the tray icon and sopping the providers you don't want. but when asked whether to persist the changes, click no. so that when you restart, you get avast running.

edit : do you use server edition?.. sorry it might be different. I didn't see which forum it is. this applies only for home and professional edition.
