« on: June 27, 2009, 05:34:49 AM »
Hi,

I can't update the latest virus virus definition. It says: An error has occur ... the package is broken. Do you guys or girls out there encounter the same problem?

Hi Ken2009,

What firewall do you use?

This could be a firewall issue.
Can you find the entry for avast and delete it?
Then do a manual update
This will force the firewall to ask to allow or disallow again

If this doesn't work you could try a repair of the Avast intallation
start-->control panel-->add or remove programs-->avast antivirus-->click remove-->scroll down and click repair

Hope his helps,

-Scott-

Please check if the file C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\servers.def is displayed correctly, it should contain [servers] on the first line.

You can try and download the servers.def file, http://files.avast.com/iavs4x/servers.def and replace the one in the avast setup folder, disabling the avast self-defense module first.

How do you connect to internet, is it ADSL? And do you have other computers with working avast updates using the same connection?

Try to open avast settings - Update (Connections), press Proxy button, and select Direct connection, press OK to confirm. Then try to start iAVS update manually again.

Sorry to bring up this old topic but I've just experienced the same problem and after searching and reading the following quote I realised what the problem is. I'm posting here for the benefit of other users so they don't have to ask all over again.

How do you connect to internet, is it ADSL? And do you have other computers with working avast updates using the same connection?

Try to open avast settings - Update (Connections), press Proxy button, and select Direct connection, press OK to confirm. Then try to start iAVS update manually again.

The problem is the Firewall settings in the ADSL router. I use an URL Filter to block access to bandwith-heavy sites (like youtube etc.) and I recently enabled the option to block surfing via IP Address.

When I went back and unchecked the option, i.e. I allowed browsing via IP address the problem goes away. I remembered that I never had the problem until I blocked surfing by IP address a few days ago.
