thanks dude can i do the same with vista firewall control and other real time protection software too?? although vista firewall control works the startup sucks.....

I don't use VFC but I would guess it would work as well.

I did download MSE and when I started to install, it wanted me to uninstall Avast.  I hate to do that, so I cancelled the installation. I was going to try it on my XP machine. 
Who has installed this and had or didn't have problems running it along side Avast?

I have it on my XP Pro system and it works well and I did not disable avast! to install it.

Its now available as Windows 7 Firewall Control.

...double post   ...Seven and Vista Firewall are OK, but they don't give you much control about what's going on with your connections, even if outbound filtering is there now. You could still mess around with the advanced interface, but I haven't seen anyone yet using it. I'd like to actually, anyone here?
 Other than this I use Comodo firewall. Works fine with either MSE or Avast.

edit: performance monitor gives more details, but it's not interactive enough.

MSE should be used with avast! Home as it provides Layered Defence for the system.

anti malware Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM)

The use of a software firewall is good as long as you know how to use it and exile360 on MBAM forum is a user of Vista Firewall Control.

Do you think it is necessary to install MSE when I already have Avast.  I don't go to dodgy sites or open foreign attachments etc.  I haven't had a virus in years with Avast.  I know it is great to try a new product, but do I really need it?
I just read your response to tkrbrian, and it has answered my question.  Thank you.

Right now, they should work side by side.
Version 5 of avast could detect MSE files as false positives (and viceversa). But this is the "problem" of two malware protections running at the same time.

I use avast Home with MSE and I find there has been no conflicts between the two services.

I also have much the same arrangement with XP Pro on a desktop, except using Online Armor firewall (paid) and Firefox browser with NoScript, WOT, and finjan. Once again, no conflicts at all.

I am thinking of loading Firefox 3.5.3 onto the laptop as well, since I am impressed by its performance on my desktop.

sorry for posting twice i was on a very slow dial up .. when i clicked 'post' the screen went blank so had to redo it ....(third world problems )...anyway for people from poor nations who have no$$ account have no means to pay for even small security softwares like sandboie..so it was avast home etc. or mostly free stuff. Microsoft has done a great job for people who have paid for their product...mostly its pirated xp in this part of the world.... sofar its a good product guys the big????is this a good product by itself or do we need other antimalware software to go with it microsoft has nothing regarding this in their forums (nothing official) and if their product is a standalone security product they should let people know. if i mess up my vista with malware the only option is pirated xp........no paypals here or dollar credit card accounts thats the reality and this product has given hope to people like me........the best part is you dont need ten products giving you security and eating up your cpu and ram................
