Morning,

For the record I am running a Compaq Presario AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3300+, 2411MHz/1.93 GBs RAM, running Windows Xp Home, SP3., with IE8.

I tried running a scan this morning and the following error message appeared: -- Application cannot load skin.  Function "usiGetSkin" failed --

I have already tried the fix below that I found on your forum but it didn't work:

Select START -> RUN...
Enter the following command:
If you have Windows NT or 2000:
C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\REGSVR32.EXE ACTSKIN4.OCX
If you have Windows 95, 98 or ME:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\REGSVR32.EXE ACTSKIN4.OCX
If you have Windows XP:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\REGSVR32.EXE ACTSKIN4.OCX
Press OK (or Enter).
A message saying that the file was successfully registered should appear.

When I do it I get a message saying it 'failed'.

Any ideas?

Thanks and regards,

Can you run ashSimp2.exe from avast folder?

For some reason, ActiveSkin (the 3rd party library avast uses for skinning) does not seem to be working on your system. As a workaround, we may disable skinning in avast - that should solve the problem.

To do that, open the file <avast>\data\avast4.ini, look up the [UserInterface] section, and add the following entry:
StartWithSkin=0

At least you can wait for avast 5.

Hi Tech and nmb,

Yes, I ran 'malwarebytes anti malware' this morning and like a 'dummy' I removed the 19 items it found before checking it out further.

Do I have any options to get Avast up and scanning again?

Thanks and regards,

go to mabm quarantine and restore the deleted items. do a reboot after that(if avast doesn't start after restoring the files from quarantine).

nmb and Tech,

Restoring the files from Quarantine did the job!

I am now running a scan with Avast.

I will be more careful in the future before I go and delete something that I don't know what I am deleting.

I appreciate your fast responses and your excellent advice.  Have a great day!

Thanks and regards,

riko777, it's time to upgrade to version 5 (and not keep the version 4.8...).
