Thanks to all of you for the input.

It should not be necessary to have to go so far as to install new apps to deal with this "bloat" though. It just surprises me from the guys at Alwil, who have forgotten more than I'll know about the subject, that it seems to grow so fast..

Probably Vladimyr is right (first reply on thread) - but still the program must have its own way of keeping the "chaff" (dead or obsolete stuff) under control!

Mine is gone, so no space used at all now. I stopped using the VRDB and deleted the old avast.int file after disabling the self-defence module.

"I stopped using the VRDB and deleted the old avast.int file after disabling the self-defence module."
I never activated the VRDB but ithe prog still takes up 115Mb after 3 days of use.

Doesn't deleting the old avast.int file expose you to old threats, most of which are still doing the rounds?

Why would it expose you to threats, when it has nothing to do with detection. It is a database that contains information to try to restore a file (which is covered by the VRDB, executable/system files, etc.) if it happens to become infected.

It isn't the virus database, which is 400.vps and just over 28MB and growing rather than shrinking.

A simple search or browse of the avast4 folders would find that ;D
It is in the C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA folder, 400.vps.

RIP VRDB.

It will not be in avast! V5 coming to your neighborhood real soon.

Strange mine is that size after over five years, just joking. It will have been that size or close to it from day one as it contains the complete virus signature database. It will slowly increase as more signatures are added in the regular automatic VPS updates.

OK Mr Überevangelist you got my number!  That would explain the 30MB that "suddenly" appeared after installation. Thanks all!
