I'd try a full reinstall from scratch.
Download the
Avast uninstall utility and save it to your desktop. (Note the directions in that link.
Download the full installer file, 36.99Mb from about 1/3 down
this page and save it to your desktop. Check your time and date are correct.
Disconnect from the web.
Restart into safe mode, and run the uninstall utility.
Restart into normal, and run the full installer.
(For both those steps, you should run as an administrator, unless you are on an administrator account.)
Once the install has completed, follow the prompts, reconnect and get updates.
If this doesn't work, it is likely that the problem is caused by malware.
I strongly recommend you download and apply SP3, and all subsequent Windows updates. It (and subsequent updates) have patched many serious security vulnerabilities.
