Everything went fine for me on both machines. One had 17 updates and this one only 14 because it has no form of the .NET Framework installed. I have never had a problem with any MS updates in my 11 years of using Windows and Office.

To avastfan1,

Check your computer's date and time.

Do you have any Firewall running?

Turn off all Startup Items and 3rd party services in Msconfig.
Start/run and type "msconfig"

Disable all Startup items, and under the Services tab check the box called "Hide all Microsoft services", and uncheck what ever is left. You should still be able to get online, unless you ISP needs a certain app to run on boot; but most do not

Also....
Control Panel/Internet Options/General Tab/Settings button/View Objects button.

On the page that loads remove the item called Update Class, that is the ActiveX contol that Windows Updates puts in.

Then try your WU again,

Sometimes one could experience a corrupted edb.log file but then one could not log in as admin.

"Catalog Database (784) Corruption can be here logfile C:\WINDOWS\System32\CatRoot2\edb.log. The Data not matching the log-file fill pattern first appeared in sector 9. This logfile hcan be damaged and is then unusable, try to recover through a back-up in that case if you have one,

I have finally Updated all of our computers...which took time but I didn't keep watching computer screens, of course.  All went well.
