Stop Avast loading at startup
« on: October 28, 2008, 10:25:38 AM »
I'm using Avast on an old laptop and it slows the laptop down to a crawl aqnd there's no solution to that. See here for details: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=39246.0;topicseen

How can I stop Avast loading at startup? So far I can only find a terminate button that doesn't last beyond shutdown.

avast is not designed to work as on-demand only (not resident).
If your computer is slow, try seeing which other programs are running, if you can, buy a little more RAM, and set avast Standard Shield level to Normal (not High).
Any other security program running?

Thanks for the reply.

I've only just wiped the computer and reloaded Windows. There are no other programs running.
It's an old laptop that's not worth my while spending any money on. I'm looking for free solutions.
The setting was Standard.
Only Spybot is also running.

Thanks for the help.

So the only way to stop the ongoing background scan element of the anti virus is to delete the entire program?

Thanks for the help here, much appreciated.

I've been recommended elsewhere to give Avira a try as being kinder to older machines. So I'll try that. Thanks again.

I don't think Avira will work for Windows ME...

I was just in the process of uninstalling when it offered me a change configuration menu.

Will unticking any (or all) of the 'resident protection' ticks stop the background checking?

Thanks for the info. Probably why it didn't install.

Avast is not intended to run as a non-resident.
Use Standard Shield at Normal level or even Custom one and uncheck open/created/modified files to be scanned.
