Hello ReaperWooT, Welcome to the forum :)

-What was your previous antivirus?
-How was it removed?

-Are you using the online installer from CNET?

Please can you try the Full installation file?

go to: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

and download the English setup file (approx 37MB)

I had the same Setup error today. I also downloaded Avast Home from your website and it installed correctly. There is obviously something wrong with the cnet download.

I just had the exact same error with the CNEET download. I didn't have any anti-virus installed previously, as this is a new build PC. So the problem is definitely with the universal installer from cnet. I'm downloading the full installer from the avast page now and will see how that goes.

I too want to report that I had the same exact problem. It must be an incompatibility issue with the installer at CNET with regard to Vista. The beautiful thing about the full installation file is that I managed to install Avast on top of McAfee. Now I am going to uninstall McAfee. Another note I want to point out is the wrong instruction that was given for inserting the license key. It should be "right-click" on the a-ball instead of "left-click".

Cheers, this is the best anti-virus freeware out on the net. Used AVG for many years until it stopped supporting Win98. Avira is not bad but the periodic nag message is a real nuisance. Keep up the good work. I will support Alwil anytime when it comes to paid subscription.

Ps. This post and several others centered on the same issue should be merged.

You shouldn't install another resident AV on top of another, that isn't a great thing and one of the faults of using an on-line installation process. All you did was replicate what I would say is a weakness of the on-line install off-line.

avast may not fully install when there is the presence of another AV to avoid a conflict.

After you uninstall McAfee you might want to ensure all remnants are gone - You didn't say which McAfee version, so here are the various tools:
- McAfee has an uninstall tool that you could run to ensure any possible remnants are removed.

glad I just checked this before making my own topic.  Thanks for pointing out the full installer, as the cnet one seems to be broken for me as well.

There seems to be a huge problem with Cnet as there have been a rash of these problems lately.

Downloading the full installation for off-line installation is to my way of thinking the best way to do it.

Add me to the list of people having a failed install with the CNET download.  I googled the problem and found this post.  As others did, I downloaded the 37 MB file directly from Avast and the install went just fine.  This was on my old Windows ME PC.
