Hi fsxfreak, welcome to the forum

Are you using the online installer from CNET?

Please can you try the Full installation file?

go to: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

and download the English setup file (approx 37MB) 


Also, which was the antivirus before avast!, how did you remove it?

OH OH, I used the CNET installer, I'm sure!  :'(

I fretted about doing that for security reasons (my ports opening w/o my knowledge, etc).

Mine is a new install so should I uninstall and use the link you provided? Thank you.

No, if it is installed already it is ok. The installer is/was having some issues at the moment...

Out of curiosity, roughly how long ago was the install?

The final result is the same, same program and same protection. You don't need to reinstall.
Just that, from times to times, CNET fails miserably... :'(

The problem was not with CNET but with out own servers that serve as backend for the CNET distribution.

Thanks for the acknowledgment. It's the policy, isn't it? So we can trust in Alwil. Although, some of us, dislike the online installation.

I am trying to install avast.  I can not get it to install.... I get an error message saying that it may not run properly because of some other antivirus (Symantec).  I have uninstalled every antivirus that I know of.  No matter how many times I repair it, update it....avast wont run.

1) Remove NAV or Norton 360 through Add/Remove programs from Control Panel. Boot.
2) Use Norton Removal Tool for Windows 2000/XP/Vista or Norton Removal Tool for Windows 98/Me. Boot.
3) Install avast! (or repair the installation) and boot.

The Norton Removal Tool uninstalls all Norton 2008/2007/2006/2005/2004/2003 products and Norton 360 from your computer.
