JAVABYTEVERA.A virus

Avast isolated a virus yesterday which it successfuly eliminated.  On a "second opinion" theory I then ran Trend Micro's on line scan.  That scan came up with 3 additional files infected with a different virus identified as JAVABYTEVERA.A, and those files were deleted by Trend Micro's software.

Obvious question:  why didn't Avast  id  the second virus?  Is it considered insignificant or harmless?  Google only came up with a couple of references,  one complaining that Norton missed it but that AVG id'd it and got rid of it.

I had exactly yhe same sort of incident yesterday. Trend Micro came up with 3 viruses that Avast didn't pick up. I don't want to appear to be whining about this because I love the Avast mail scanning which with a great deal of assistance I have set up to include scanning Mailmate junk mail. I reallyneed to know if I can run Avast with Trend Micro realtime scan, this is incorporeted in V-Comm System Suite. or is their a chance Avast failed because Trend Micro could have been running at the same time?
As I say not complaining, just trying to learn.

Found this from a google search on JAVABYTEVERA, only one hit returned, which is strange for a virus, usually hundreds of hits.

Finally, re-scanned with PC-Cillin AGAIN and found the little bastard...JavaByteVerA-1...a non-destructive virus that uses a flaw in VM to allow someone FULL access to my computer, including executing programs (e.g., AIM). Now I have to find this damned Java fix to get rid of it.

It would appear from this that using AIM (possibly any IM), if you are and not having a fully updated VM (java Virtual Machine), there is a vulnerability, you need to patch either Sun's or Microsoft's java Virtual Machine, whichever one you are using.

Install jVM patch, reboot, check for infection (likely), remove, disable system restore and reboot. Check again if clear enable system restore (this assumes you are using XP, neither of you said).

I found a virus on the downstairs computer using Avast! Home Edition...  This was found with a standard scan....so I decided to make sure it was clean..(The system, that is)  I would perform a thorough scan.  Sure enough it turned up a few more viruses.  So...whenever I find a virus using a standard or quick scan...I then perform a thorough.  Avast! is a great product!
