Welcome to the forums gadfell2,

Please try using avast's repair function via:

Windows Key+R > Type in: appwiz.cpl > Select avast! antivirus > Click Change/Remove > Scroll down to find the Repair function > Click Next > Complete all the prompts and proceed to reboot.

If above does not work, please take time to answer these questions:

(1) What are you PC's specs?
(2) What is/are your current antivirus(es)?
(3) What is/are your previous antivirus(es)?
Windows 7 (64-bit) Home Premium SP1
avast! 9 RC1

L`arc thanks for the reply,it did the trick.I shut down and restarted and the icons reappeared.I have
uninstalled a Norton product, not sure if that was the problem but my probs came when I installed it.
Maybe coincidence?Thanks again.

Good to hear. From what you've mentioned, you just have a Norton product before. Some Norton products leave remnants, after being uninstalled, which could actually interfere with the next antivirus's performance. If possible, please use the respective Norton Removal Tool to eliminate those remnants.

NOTE: Some parts of avast may be eliminated too. It would be better to reinstall avast after doing this so.

Some. I couldn't tell yet. I just experienced it the first time I posted a problem about my PC in this forums. My avast suffered RPC errors after using Norton Removal Tool. Maybe it was fixed now since its already a year since then. Well, in any case, I'll just edit my post. :D

Memories, haha. I feel nostalgic now, thank you Tech.
