Consider trying repair function of avast.

1   Press Windows key + R
2   Type: appwiz.cpl
3   Select avast! antivirus
4   Click Change/Remove
5   avast! will show a dialog box, scroll down until you find Repair
6   Click Next... and continue doing the next prompts
7   Restart

 Hope this one works.

Hi
The trouble with all windows operating systems is the registry gets bloated overtime, and if you google about win rot this is very interesting subject. I reformat XP at least once every 2 years or so and the speed increase is amasing! on a new install of XP. Im sure that you have some kind of registry fault that is preventing avast from working correctly as it sometimes happens on booting. Have you got any restore points at a point as when you first got the computer and the only snag is it may restore the old virus program entrys that you have removed previously. Have you got windows defender installed as this could cause avast trouble?

Hi all
Despitethe help and advice I have had from the people on this forum I have not been able to cure the conflict problem with Avast.
I have now removed Avast and downloaded AVG and I have had no problems over the last four days having rebooted at least twenty times.
Again, thank you all for your efforts and patience.
regards
