Eicar standard virus test

avast seems to work perfectly except for that particular file.I do not believe a reinstall would help at all ,though i will try it this weekend.

It should be easy to delete the offending file, you can always change the file extension to .txt.This usually allows you to delete it,if its in use by another programme after a reboot.I think the problem i have with eicar may be somewhat different though.

After some experimenting , i still cant find any conflicts with other programmes as avast behaves the same with everything shutdown when clickng the eicar.com file.What ihave found is that when ashserve.exe stops responding (info in control alt delete) and i then shut down ashserve and restart it again , it works perfectly on the eicar.com file.Im at a loss as to what it can be at th moment.Mayeb if theres anyone here with 98se they could try the file so i can rule out an operating system problem.

I notice that when I search "eicar.com" file no file like this is find on my computer.
I notice that when I start a avast! scan for HDD no virus is detected (good!)
In fact it's only when I start a avast! scan for HDD and including archives that I've got the warning avast! windows...
So where is locate the eicar.com

archive scanning include Zipped files so maybe the eicar .com file you downloaded is in zipped format?.If you check warning logs ...right click avast icon >select avast log viewer>click warning you should see the eicar file logged and the path to where its located.

Hi Bassbag and thanks a lot for your usefull help:
I finaly locate the eicar file in dos mode and delete it (ooooh yeees !)
Now avast! works properly...and I'm now stressless

When I was testing the Eicar File with Avast on my win98se machine, Avast does not seem to like it. My machine was freezing when I attempted to download the file. On another note, I must have by accident, backed up My documents directory that still had the Eicar test file in it. My backup program stores the directory as a Zip file and Avast caught it on the last scan of my D:drive. The problem was that Avast could not get rid of it no matter what option I selected. This happened a couple weeks ago and I can not remember the error it was giving me. It would not move it to the chest, rename, delete on boot up,  or anything. I just ended up deleting the entire zip file manually through explorer.
