Avast slowing my browser - just started a few days ago
« on: November 16, 2009, 02:51:47 AM »
I've started games on facebook, all with animations & messages from the game.  At first all was well and everything loaded quickly and operated smoothly.  The past few days FireFox 3.5.5 is struggling to keep things moving.  It takes forever to load anything and once loaded, the animations are jerky (from buffering I think). Things frequently fail to load at all. I cleared the Firefox cache per instructions in the games, but that didn't help. Neither did restarting the PC.

I checked Comodo's in/out bound connections area and found ashWebSv had 151 outbound connections open. 151 !! (I only had 3 tabs open in Firefox.) I tried terminating them but they wouldn't close.  I paused every function in the avast! window and that helped some, but it was still very very slow.

I read through some similar posts, but nothing quite matched. http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=48713.0 came closest, but I don't know where to find "Program Settings > Troubleshooting" to follow the instructions there.

I am running Vista Home Premium 64 bit w Svc Pk 2.

I have Comodo 3.12.111745.560 (free version for home users).  I have both the firewall & the antivirus, but no auto-scanning enabled in Comodo's or Avast!'s antivirus parts.  Not to mention that I've been running Comodo & Avast! together for about a year and never had this problem.

I'm very new & not very computer savvy, so please forgive me for needing everything in kindergarten terms.

I don't know if it's relevant, but my last thorough scan a/v scan using Avast! took over 12 hours. This is also much longer than any previous scan.

I've liked having Avast! but I can't put up with this huge slowdown.  I hope one of you can help me fix it. Thank you!

Outpost is a good firewall that many avast! users have that has less problems:
