PC hangs at "Loading Your Personal Settings" Screen
« on: November 20, 2009, 03:04:23 AM »
Hello-

Would greatly appreciate anyone's assistance on this issue.  I dloaded the free version of Avast several months ago for my Win XP pro system.  Things seemed to work fine for a couple weeks, but then I began to have intermittent problems getting into my PC.  Usually the PC would hang at the "Loading Your Personal Settings" screen and would not make progress even if left running for quite some time. Sometimes I could get past this screen and into the desktop only to find that clicking on the icons would not open up any applications.   I have since uninstalled Avast but continue to have the same problems.  I suspect Avast may be at fault since there seem to be so many references to AntiVirus software when I search the internet for information re: this issue.

Additional info:  I eventually tried the Avast Uninstall Utility thinking maybe there were some left over bits and pieces, but that did not do the trick.  I also understand that Avast may conflict with Zone Alarm which I have on my system.  Any suggestions?

What other security programs, eg. Firewall, are you using?

Perhaps post a Hijackthis log here? Moreover a quick scan with MBAM would be useful as well.

Have you checked the 'Startup' list for automatic startup items?

Try mucking around with 'msconfig' and disable services individually to try and isolate the problem.

Hi Avastfan1-

Thanks for the quick response.  ZoneAlarm is the only other security program I remember loading.  Here's a Hijackthis log.  In looking through it, I guess Sonicwall might also be considered a security app, but that was added after I began having the issue.  I hope this is what you meant by asking me to post here:

Try http://support.microsoft.com/kb/816873 and http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315270 . Also, you can probably get into your system using safe mode.
