is the update server down?

It seens as if the pings worked 0% failure on both. (4 0f 4 and 3 of 3)

If you tried ping download1.avast.com, does it return the same IP address (the numbers) I gave you on the second one?

Have you tried reconnecting to the Internet?

I'm going to restart my connection after the scan is done.  I'll just reinstall it if that doesn't fix it.  It's taking too lang as it is.   It's faster to install again.

If you do a reinstall (uninstall then reinstall - not repair), make sure you are doing a clean install and clean leftovers by Avast before installing the new version.

From my experience, I don't have any bad leftovers by Avast so I think you are alright.

Just a note, if PING *Avast Server* fails on your system, most likely is that reinstalling the application will not help. Seems more like an Internet connection problem to me.

I suspect there might have been server problems at avast-dot-com last night (Thursday night), late evening Eastern Time (GMT-4) -- I was totally unable to check updates or get into the forums here, although no problems getting around elsewhere on the net.

But I've had no problems with update checks or the forum at all today or this evening.

I reinstalled and reconfigured avast.  I even checked the proxy server using the test connection.  I still cannot acess the server when updating.  I'm going to assume that the server where I am (Texas) is down.  I used to be able to upadate automatically.

Actually most of our updating servers are located in Houston.
Morover, this very forum is hosted on one of them and appearently you can access it.

It must definitely be something on your machine.

Well, everything else works except update, so I'll have to update using the web site.  Beggars cannot be choosers (free service).

1. Do you have a firewall?
2. Check out the file <avast>\setup\setup.log. It should contain some more info about the problem.

I get the same problem even if I disable the firewall...
I haven't changed any settings...
It used to update...

Are you sure you don't connect through a proxy server?
Also, can you post the log file I mentioned in my last post (you'll have to give it the .txt extension to be able to upload to the forum).
