The Program Update
« on: November 26, 2009, 08:34:39 PM »
Hello! Avast automaticaly downloads and installs iAVS updates, but doesn't notify me on a new program version update (I have it set to "Ask when update is available"). Why is that so? Thank you!

It *may* be simply that you have not been chosen to be notified yet.

IIRC, the updates are spread over about a week, so that the servers are not overloaded.

You may find that you have not got the notification yet...I find that I get it a bit later than others...

As has been mentioned, it is on a 7 day cycle, but there is nothing stopping you doing a manual Program Update check, when you know there is one available (as regular forum users do).

I suspect that for any given update, there's a certain amount of randomness in the order of the "call list" (for notifying or auto-updating) each time.  I got the notification about 1367 when I first got online this morning, and there's been other times I feel I've probably been way down the list, judging by comments from others who'd already gotten it.

  • If at first you don’t succeed; call it version 1.0

One thing is that unless you happen to be looking at the monitor for the minute or so that the update notice (a sliding green box) appears, you may miss it.
Got it this morning at about 2130 UTC.

*Bump*
When I check the avast! Log viewer, I noticed that there has some updating going on but it failed...
<Function setifaceUpdatepackages() has failed. Return code is 0x00000426, dwRes is 00000312>

What does this mean? Does this imply "The not receiving program update?" problem?

Thanks^^

Hello kevin,

I generally don't worry about the logs unless I really have some problem with avast!

With the previous Program Update, I waited for definitely more than 7 days.  It think it was closer to 3 weeks and it never came.  I finally did the Manual Update.

But, with this latest one, I was notified right away.

I updated it manually, but when I click on "about" it says it's still the September version:

It's probably just a typo, since the version number is the November's one. What do you think?

Have you rebooted, if not that should use the new information ?

If you have, try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. This has in the past resolved this out of sync issue between reported and actual VPS version.

That is right. Mine displays the same. I think it is down to when they are built, so they get tested internally or something...

I wouldn't worry.  It is not really the date that is important, but the build number, which shows you have the most recent version.

Edit: just seen David's post, if I remember correctly, the build date was always a little behind...is it the same with you David?

Just found an old post of mine: the 1348 version released in August had the date of may...seems to be correct the way I see it...

So... I should just leave it as it is? The program itself works fine I think.
