Home Edition on Windows Server 2008 r2
« on: November 27, 2009, 02:01:46 AM »
Avast in my opinion is the best AV program I have ever used. It is amazing compared to AVG. I would definitely recommend this to friends. However, I'm running Windows Server 2008 which I received through Microsoft's Dream Spark and Avast will install in compatibility mode for xp but the resident scanner will not run and i cannot update. I was told that I need server edition but I do not have $400 sitting around to spend. Seeing as I do not have a business and I'm only a student, I have no use for the server edition. Can anyone help me?

Yes you are in the unfortunate position where the desktop versions won't run on a server OS, they weren't designed for that.

The closest that you might get is if you can get hold of windows home server OS, then avast has a home server edition which is more reasonably priced, for home users not businesses. See http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-windows-home-server-edition.html.

There is also an option for other systems on the network, http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-professional-family-pack.html.

Other than these links I can't help as I don't use either of the products.

Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.2.6105 (build 24.2.8918.824) UI 1.0.799/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

Been there, done that...
There's a dwindling number of single license AntiMalware products that will run on Windows Server OS. It would be great to be able to use use 'avast! Home' but Alwil choose, like amost all AM providers, to limit compatibility of Home-user products to Home-user OSs.

Shortest distance between problem and solution? I now have a few HP and IBM Server 2003 file server machines running Rising 2009 at what is for a commercial user, the ridiculously low price of USD19.95 each, but have not tried it on Server 2008.

Panda's Free Cloud Antivirus might work. I'd ask on the forum first if I were you.

I don't think MS's own MSE will work but I haven't tried it either.
