Avast Quick Scanner
« on: June 18, 2003, 05:39:03 PM »
Hi Folks :)

My prob is, after browsing this forum, i thought i would try out the Eicar test zip.

Downloaded it & then right clicked on it & selected scan.Up pops the scan box & then a warning that there is an infected file

Now if i try move/rename, delete, or even just ok, the prog then crashes in Kernal32.dll

Here is the faultlog report. i hope this is just a bug & can be solved as it won't be much use if it crashes whatever choice i make

Date 06/18/2003 Time 16:22

Banzi,

The Eicar test file seems to cause many Avast users problems.   Search the forum and you will see that each user seems to have a unique experience with the test file.
Fortunately, my own Avast functions normally in identifying the "virus" in the zip file and moving the file without incident, but others have not.
I know the Avast Support Team is aware of this and is looking into it.

Avast DOES work properly with a real virus....I know.
Avast found 2 viruses hidden in old email, and removed them cleanly.

If you want more insight into Eicar, go to www.eicar.org and read about it.  Some AVs are very sensitive to the test file and won't react the same to it as they will to the real thing.

Good luck.  ;D

Thanks for the reply techie101 :)

Like i said all choices end up with a crash, it did offer to let me send an error report, but sent it before i had finished typing(might have pressed a key by mistake)

Does anyone know if there any other test files out there for testin AV progs???

Cheers

Update.Tried running the main Avast program & the only way it could detect the file was to select thourgh scan & scan archive files

Any ideas on how it missed the file the first 2 times i tried(quick scan/scan archives, then standard scan/scan archives)

And thanks for such a good program, it's the Biz
