Updating Avast without an internet connection
« on: June 01, 2009, 01:39:47 AM »
I recently lost my windows machine to a set of nasty viruses (stupid drunk roommates) and have physically isolated the drives and installed Ubuntu 9.04 to try to clean them up.  I've never really used linux before, with the exception of its partitioning tools, so I'm a little lost.

I am running without an internet connection (it doesn't like my wireles card) so I can't use automatic updates, but I have the current vspupd.exe on a thumbdrive.  The trouble is, Ubuntu thinks it's a zip file, which it isn't.  How do I go about updating my virus definitions?

Perhaps someone can help me. I also am trying to update the 400.vps file without an internet connection on a pc running windows.

I have copied the current file from the internet, but I cannot replace or delete the old one which is in a folder called Avast/DATA. The error message says 'Cannot delete 400: Access is denied.'

I assume that I am doing something stupid and that there must be a really easy answer to this, but I have searched all through the program settings, the help files, FAQs and this forum and I still cannot find it. Help!

Simon.

I assume this is the ill-famed "feature" of Windows-based systems, that a file, that's in use, can't be overwritten/deleted (correct me if I'm wrong).
So, stop all avast'sthing first, to be able to manipulate this file this direct way (but AFAIK there's a dedicated tool for offline vps update, for Windows).
