First scan seems to "stick"
« on: June 19, 2003, 09:59:08 AM »
Hello people , Downloaded yesterday and very impressed with the interface and everything but I just have a small problem. When I run the first scan it gets to a point and then seems to freeze.Tried it a couple of times and it stops at the same file number.Tried leaving it for a while in case it was just a very large file! But is 20 minutes excessive? Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer

Oops, this should never happen.

What level did you use when scanning (Quick/Normal/Thorough)?
Was archive scanning turned on or off? If on, does the problem happen even if you turn it off?

Also, it would be very helpful if you turned on the generation of the report file. To do this, go to program settings (e.g. by right-clicking anywhere in the window), and turn it on (on the Reports page). Tell avast to generate report for all kinds of scanned files (infected files, OK files etc.).

On next scan, this will generate a file with a list of all files avast touched. When it freezes again, take a look at the end of the file and note the last file that's there. It's most likely that the file causing the problems is the one that is located immediately beyond this file (on the disk) - at least you might guess the directory where it's located from it...

Anwyay, do you have any huge files on your disk (>2GB)?

Thanks,
Vlk

Thanks for the advice Vlk , bit busy right now but will give your suggestions a try later on today.I don't think I have any huge files but it seems to stop on my documents ( is this relevant?) Thanks again

Yes, it's relevant. In fact, we are enormously interested in getting the problematic file - so that we can fix it asap.

Thanks!

Hello Vlk ,
I finally got round to trying what you suggested!
Firstly , I have tried it on quick and normal and thorough and the same problem persists.I took your advice and set the reports on and the file it gets to is c:\ My Documents\ xlViewer.exe

Is there any way I can find out what the next file would be? Do they run in any sort of order?   Thanks in advance for your help

Hello,

what operating system are you using?
Is there any sorting obvious from the log?
Maybe you could try to find out the "sorting" using the dir command:
dir "c:\My Documents" > files.txt
and check what's following xlViewer.exe.
If you have any suspicion, you can try to scan the file alone - to make sure.

So scan of My Documents only triggers the problem as well?
Are you scanning with archives enabled or disabled? With Normal or Thorough level?

To find out which file follows xlViewer.exe, it may be worth trying to do the scan on Quick (or is it called Easy?) level, with archives turned off, with report file generation on. Assuming this scan completes successfully, looking into the report will immediately reveal the file name.

igor,

dir "c:\My Documents" > files.txt

dir in WinNT/2K/XP/2K3 is sorted by name, and I don't think there is a way to force it to produce unsorted output.

Not true, it does not sort. It's just that filename are always sorted by name on NTFS volumes...

Guy, could I ask you to identify and send us the problematic file?
It's important for us.

Thanks
