Oh wise sages of the forum please help! :-)
« on: December 04, 2009, 01:26:32 AM »
Hello! :-)

A friend of mine is using Nero Photoshow 4 on a Window$ 7 machine and receives this message:

The application has failed to start because mfc71.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix the problem.

My friend Google gives conflicting results. Some say it is Malware (wtf?), others a legitimate program linked to The Microsoft Foundation Class Library.

1. Is this program malware?

2. If not, how would you recommend solving this problem?

3. Would you follow a commonly suggested solution, download it from http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?mfc71 and copy it to c:\windows\system32 and the Photoshow programme directory?

Many thanks in advance for your kind help!

Cheers,

Avastfan1

Hi...

Give #3 a shot and see what happens, although it should solve the problem. :)

May God bless you :)

Did your friend actually check to see if this file does exist in the c:\windows\system32 folder ?

If it does it may be that the dll just needs to be registered.

Could also be stored in the wrong place.  First thing to do is a file search from Windows Explorer File Finder to make sure you don't already have it.  Then you can download it from a reliable source, and to be extra careful upload it to Virus Total (http://www.virustotal.com/) to make sure it is a good version, not a virus.  Then use it.

Thank you for the replies, I will search for the file today.

- How do you register a .dll file in Window$ 7?
- Which website is a reliable source to download it from?

Thanks in advance!

You could conclude the story by saying what it was that solved the problem.

Fair point DavidR.

She simply copied the file from the Window$ System32 directory to every Nero directory on the hard disk. The error message no longer appears.

However, it turns out that Nero Photoshow 4 deluxe is only compatible with Window$ 7. So, although it solved the mfc71.dll problem, the program still doesn't fully function!
