The recent false virus episode made me realize that my avast! PRO only has two options when a virus has been found, not three as is customary.

Normally, there is 1) Ignore, 2) Clean and 3) Quarantine. Here, there seems to be _no_ option for cleaning a virus but condemning a file - or an entire program like my browser, plus other browsers I have not even used for many weeks - to the virus vault is the very only option.

That's a very disturbing realization. Why does avast! not clean even the least serious of threats, instead of quarantining every file it finds to contain a threat of whatever kind?

You can only clean if a legitimate file has been 'infected' with non-legitimate (usually viral) code. So it depends on the virus type
If the hole file is the viral code then you can`t clean, and it is of course not necessary since your computer wont miss that file
