Reporting of False Positives and Reporting of Bad Sites
« on: December 20, 2009, 05:30:23 AM »
Dear Avast Users,

I thank you for your wonderful support on this forum and have learned tons!!!  Two questions that are in a way related:

1.) What actually happens to a file if you report it as a false positive, how is it tested, and how are users notified of the results?

AND

2.) If users know of a bad site, how should they report it to Avast so that it is added to the malicious URL blocker list?  If user reporting is possible, are users notified when the site has been added?

Thanks in advance!

Jack

1. It would be analysed by someone in the virus labs of avast, you are not normally contacted unless they need more information.

2. you van send an email to virus (at) avast (dot) com with 'Undetected Malware - Network Shield' in the subject and the information and URL in the body of the email. Again I don't know if you would be contacted.

They usually answer by the virus definitions updates like David said. They usually do not personal contact the informer.

Yup...

This is what they exactly did. I reported a false positive and it got fixed after 2 updates. My nephew plays an online game and Avast was reporting the Game Client to be infected with a malware. I checked with MBam, SAS, ESET Online Scan, and Housecall by Trend Micro, and none of those four on demand scanners could detect anything from the file that Avast was reporting to be infected. Since it doesn't allow the program to run, after 2-3 updates I think, the program was eventually running (note that the online game is installed in my profile in the PC, so that means, my nephew can only play under an adult supervision... We are kind of strict when it comes to Online stuff with kids...). That is how I knew that Avast fixed it.
