Word Processor - I need a suggestion
« on: December 30, 2009, 02:41:23 PM »
I just need a light word processor.

I need it for plain typing.

I don't need any extra features

Do you know of any?

Paid, or not?

Paid:
MS Word...

Free
Abiword:http://www.abisource.com/
Portable version: Installs to one folder so you can test it: http://portableapps.com/apps/office/abiword_portable

Openoffice: Openoffice.org
Portable Version: http://portableapps.com/apps/office/openoffice_portable

The portable versions are a lot better for just simple testing, it will install to a folder of your testing and when/if you want rid of it, you can just delete the folder.
I also use some portable versions of software instead of running the installed software...

-Scott-

EDIT: rdmaloyjr  likes abiword too ;)

Hmm

I already have installed MS Office 2007 and OpenOffice

I was looking for an alternative that is just for plain typing and less resource hungry.

Thanks for the Abiword suggestion.

The answerers seem to be for programs. Did you really mean a stand alone word processor like Smith Corona used to make?
Packard Motorcars said "Ask the man who owns one". They're not in business anymore.

Resources are there to be used and I can't believe with your system you have any concern about a lack of resources.

You are in my opinion seeking an answer to a problem that doesn't exist.

Yes, I agree...reading a bit more into the thread, like I should have... ;)

Why would your monster system need a lighter word processor? On mine MS word works fine, and lets be honest, it really doesn't compare...

Albert Einstein was a genius so I like to take his advice:
"Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler."

MS Wordpad for me  8)

MS Word for me ans that is from Office 97, still does the job for me, I have never found a really good reason for the bells, whistles and bloat of later versions. Perhaps if I find an old copy of MS Office 2000, possibly the last best version before the bloat, then I might consider updating ;D

If you really want a lightweight word processor, there is always wordpad :P

David, the "bloat" occurred on version 2007.
So, Office 2003 is the "last" for you, imho.

Compared to 2000, 2003 doesn't really add much to Office, that really if why I'm reluctant to update office 97, it does all that I need.

The biggest problem with office suites is that 80% of the people only use 20% of the functionality.

Then to sell more copies MS has to come up with some more bells and whistles, whilst the underlying word and excel do the same, just in a prettier environment.
