What OS are you using? Have you enabled stuff like power-on-LAN?

Windows 2000.  Whereabouts can I check if power-on LAN is enabled ? Thanks.

In your motherboard setup (BIOS).
(I'm quite sure it's a coincidence anyway)

Not really... you may try to unplug your network cable to see if it helps.
My friend has similar problems - the computer sometimes turns on overnight; it seems that this occurs only when the computer is switched off by the power button (instead of an ordinary Windows "shutdown") - but it's really hard to say.

So both WakeOnLan and WakeOnRing were disabled in BIOS setup?

Also, do you have a modem and a phone-line attached to it? It can be that someone's calling your number (wake-on-ring).

Since the computer is turned off I really see no chance for avast to cause this... most likely your house is haunted... ;)

Thanks for the suggestions /help.

Disabling PME Wake On in my BIOS settings seems to have sorted it.

Avast is pronounced Not Guilty and free to go and also to be an excellent piece of software !  :)

I've heard that any type of magnetic field(like the one created by your hard drive)is a place that "spirits" can rest.
Perhaps they don't like it when you turn it off. ;D
