Installation Problem_Invalid Page Fault
« on: June 18, 2004, 08:56:02 PM »
I downloaded Avast 4 Pro and started the installation.  Close to the end of the installation process I got this error:
Avast caused an invalid page fault in module Kernel 32.dll at 0187: bff7a3d4.

I tried to install several times, but could not succeed because of the invalid page fault.  I have Windows 98, Second Edition.  I completely uninstallled Norton from my computer and cleaned up the registry before trying to install Avast.

In the meantime, I guess I had better try AVG, because I cannot leave my computer unprotected.

Any help in overcoming this problem would be appreciated.

Are there any additional information in the error box?

Ok, I believe, but as you are experiencing trouble, maybe you still have NAV or traces of it in your system  :'(
Do you use a firewall?

mh,

More than likely the page fault in the kernel module is the result of a conflict.
If you had Norton installed, it is not that easy to remove.

If you IM Technical, he can steer you to a detailed removal process he had in another post.  EVERY bit of Norton must be removed or Avast could have a problem on install.

AVG is better than nothing, but a friend recently switched over from AVG to Avast and Avast detected 2 virus infections!

Let us know what addtional help you need.

Thanks to Technical and Techie 101.

I uninstalled the complete Norton Internet Security, which includes the Firewall and the Norton AntiVirus.  Then, I went into Registry edit and deleted everything I could find relating to Norton and Symantec; then I ran System Mechanic and deleted all the invalid registry entries found there.  Then I ran Ashampoo WinOptimizer Platiinum Suite, and I deleted all registry entries that they found.  Then I checked my computer to make sure that there were no more files or folders anywhere relating to Norton or Symantec.

When I was unable to complete the AVAST install, I downloaded and installed the AVG Pro Trial; it did install.

I would prefer AVAST to AVG, because my research tells me that it is a better program, but I cannot leave my computer unprotected.

Please, please figure out how I can get AVAST installed.

Perhaps I should stay offline a few days, finish all my backups and copying of data and setups, etc. to CDs, and then install Windows 2000, and then try AVAST again.  I am very upset about the antivirus/firewall problems.

I await a solution.  Thanks.
