win32: malware-gen cscript.exe
« on: January 12, 2010, 02:46:59 PM »
Avast keeps identifying cscript.exe as malware, even after it is moved to the chest.  I do not know whether cscript.exe is the legitimate file or a virus.

Running Windows XP version 2000 Service Pack 3

I have done a cleanmgr.  I have run several Avast scans, several MBAM scans, three ComboFix scans, and I have gone over the HijackThis log.  Infection was found in the System Restore so I turned that off and back on. Attached is the HijackThis log.  I also have the  two OTL logs, but they are too long to post.  I'd appreciate any help you can give me to get rid of this win32: malware-gen.  Thank you.

I do not know whether cscript.exe is the legitimate file or a virus.
Submit it to www.virustotal.com and check.

I also have the  two OTL logs, but they are too long to post.

click on additional options and post the OTL logs as attachments

I read one of the other posts in the Avast forum that there was an update on Avast that would correct the false positive on cscript.exe.  I updated and ran another scan and cscript.exe was not tagged this time as a virus.

I am attaching the OTL logs but it may be unnecessary at this point.

I did one last scan with ComboFix and it questioned cscript.exe.  I did a SuperAntispyware scan and it came up with just a cookie which was removed.  I went to jotti and scanned the cscript.exe file:

Filename:  cscript.exe
Status:  Scan finished. 2 out of 20 scanners reported malware.

File size:  135168 bytes
Filetype:  PE32 executable for MS Windows (console) Intel 80386 32-bit
MD5:  23d42c651f89420f7232aeb7a2a43d03
SHA1:  8e34dbdc5fa9904ccd0d8f9acc462adbcf5ed474

I am going to consider this a closed case.  As far as I can see, this computer is clean.  This computer belongs to a pastor friend and I'm going to return it to him.  Thank you for your help.

I don't know how to post so I'm using this reply.  Perhaps someone can re-direct me.

My computer has been infected with Win32 Malware-gen.  I need help with this.  Don't know what it is, what it does, or how it may affect my laptop.  I ran Avast scan and it was recommended to quarrantine it.  What does this mean.  Do I have a serious problem and what can I do to prevent it from happening again?  Thanks - Chuck

- To start a New Topic of your own.
- Go to this link, http://forum.avast.com/index.php, scroll down to the Viruses and Worms forum and click it, click the New Topic button at the top of the list and post there.

There copy and paste your post here and also give details about the detection:
What is the infected file name, where was it found e.g. (C:\windows\system32\infected-file-name.xxx) ?
Check the avast! Log Viewer (right click the avast 'a' icon), Warning section, this contains information on all avast detections. C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashLogV.exe

- Or check the source file using notepad C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Warning.log and copy and paste the entry.
