Hi Logos,

There is more to this then is made public. What about the fact that those that used the recent IE hack are sitting on a big jar of similar exploitable holes probably else you won't spoil one so broadly:  http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/03/09/internet_explorer_attacks/
And what of Baidu growing to a global search position like Yahoo had, and that that might be of some concern to Google's: http://techcrunch.com/2010/01/13/google-v-baidu-it%E2%80%99s-not-just-about-china/

It is an intermix of business and censorship issues and various backgrounds, and then a very complicated mix of all these issues as well, while China has been depicted as a backward plagiator, that is not a true depiction of the momentairy situation: China has strong engineering talents, a lot of investment capital, the world's largest Internet community, especially where gaming and the social media sector is meant an interesting market,

Anti-virus suites still can't block Google China attack

Analysis The vast majority of consumer anti-virus products are still failing to block the Operation Aurora exploits used in the high profile attack against Google and other blue-chip firms last December, according to independent tests.

Google Shuts China Site in Dispute Over Censorship
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/23/technology/23google.html

So earlier today we stopped censoring our search services—Google Search, Google News, and Google Images—on Google.cn. Users visiting Google.cn are now being redirected to Google.com.hk, where we are offering uncensored search in simplified Chinese, specifically designed for users in mainland China and delivered via our servers in Hong Kong. Users in Hong Kong will continue to receive their existing uncensored, traditional Chinese service, also from Google.com.hk. Due to the increased load on our Hong Kong servers and the complicated nature of these changes, users may see some slowdown in service or find some products temporarily inaccessible as we switch everything over.

Hi Logos,

This are the services that main land China still have available now:
http://www.google.com/prc/report.html#hl=en
The redirects to China.hk could soon be further crippled.

thanks for that link. It's just a matter of days before China blocks completely access to Google HK...(from mainland China)... might be more difficult for China, officially ruling Honk Kong now, to interfere there. And I don't think they'll even try.

Google redirects China site

It appears that Google may be taking first steps toward an exit in China, re-directing visitors of Google.cn -
the domain name for its Chinese site - to Google.hk, its Hong Kong site.

During the last week or so, there have been bulletins outlining Google's responsibility to advertisers, and the likely breaching of that responsibility if they were to exit China. And this in the face of a China government that seemingly was about to put the squeeze on the software giant.

China state media step up rhetoric against Google
http://www.cnn.com/2010/BUSINESS/03/21/china.google.rhetoric/index.html?hpt=Sbin

I meant to post the bulletins at the time and will now go back see what I can find about this peripheral issue in the Google / China impasse. I believe some advertisers were lining up compensation cases. Interesting too were attempts to tally Google's investments in China up to this point, and then the announcement about the near completion of the Unity cable, which by any persons reasoning would once again put Google back on the China road map .

http://www.v3.co.uk/v3/news/2259863/google-almost-ready-pacific

I will not be surprised if Google has moved very quickly to turn the situation to its own advantage. So I will see if I can dig up a couple of the articles on Google's China portfolio, and what would have been at stake, (and may yet still be), were software maker to have been adversely caught between its advertising commitments and an increasingly antagonistic China government.

Past history now, perhaps, but still an insight into how capably the company can move amongst the biggest market players to secure its interest and re-confirm its investment strategy, in face of what appeared at the time to be impossible odds.

Comments left on Chinese website sina.com.cn include "Google, out of China" and "Go away, we have Baidu".

Internet and mobile company TOM Online, which is run by Hong Kong's wealthiest man Li Ka-shing, said that it would stop using Google.

The companies have an agreement which will not be renewed, claimed TOM.

A Google spokesperson insisted that the firm would fulfill existing contractual obligations.

Hi Logos,

In this link there are some serious accusations mentioned: http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2010/mar/24/cyber-attack-on-us-firms-google-traced-to-chinese/

My question how many versions have we heard so far - students from Chinese schools, state sponsored hackers, Chinese amateurs. It is all about data mining, but what are the smoke screens trying to hide from the general public?

Hi Polonus,

if you're hinting that the US are using some pretext to leave the Chinese market, therefore the confusion among different versions of the story in the medias, I don't know, I sincerely don't know ;)

 Otherwise:

He said censorship had become more than a human rights issue and was hurting profit for foreign companies that rely on the Internet to reach customers.

You also need to realize that China is currently the banker for the US.  We have to be nice or they may cut off Washington's purse strings.  Not something the Obama administration can afford. >:(
