might be about time to change this situation... I find the economic ties between China on one side and US/EU on the other side completely insane.

Sergey Brin or Brin Sergey? I always seem to get it wrong, because I'm not in any way Soviet related.

Thanks for the comment Logos. I love Mr Brin, maths genius, always occupies the high moral ground, when everything about his ilk would suggest that he won't.

You probably know this story.
Back in 9/11, he and Larry Page were sitting on a plain as day 64bit server when nearly every broadcast channel in the country crashed down around them. They cranked up their box and aimed it at the whole country, and turned out to be the whole world. Google News was born. By the next day, they were No.1 on the internet, and they have stayed that way ever since.

Hi Logos,

China: Google is the biggest looser here: http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/opinion/2010-03/22/content_9620293.htm
@Logos this is strange news: https://lists.dns-oarc.net/pipermail/dns-operations/2010-March/005280.html  Some users in USA and Chili were filtered like in mainland China because the China filter was connected to some global backbone filters. Weird news, must have been by mistake, but still makes you wonder.....your butcher in Avignon sends you a mail and you find it was Green Dam filtered  ;D Well this is very unlikely because we have our own European backbone servers....

Hey great picture

They were so many millions in already by 9/11, so the Google guys weren't exactly just starting out.
What they had was available bandwidth - the 64bit server. And not much more.

And so what else did they have? Well, easy to see from Logos screenshot that they more or less had everybody else's websites which at the time was, and arguably still is, a questionable use of other people's property. But there it is in the picture as real as day - the wisdom of Google.

there's an interesting thread that got started on the same topic on another forum where I post (as Logos as well):
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=247911

ps: there use to be a "free speaking" section there that got ditched a while ago. So this thread I link to can be locked anytime ;) ... hasn't happened yet surprisingly ;D

Hi Logos,

I think one could say that mainland China now is being used as kind of a "global testbed" to see what works and what does not, iDNS, PIv6, etc. Slightly off-topic in the Google case, but why the censor always has the last word: http://www.peacefire.org/circumventor/list-of-possible-weaknesses.html
