cant install avast home on my laptop - PLEASE HELP
« on: January 16, 2010, 04:05:25 PM »
I have been trying for almost 20 hours to install avast home on my laptop.  I have used avast for years and LOVE it and have NEVER had this trouble getting it on a computer!

I have downloaded the Cnet version and both the universal and the english (larger) version straight from the avast site, each time it failed and I would delete the temporary file (nothing to uninstall because it never gets that far) and try again after a reboot. I have also tried to just RUN it from the website without downloading it (setupeng.exe) and it gets as far as the "downloading packages-Downloading file: setupeng.exe" and  then I get "Connectin terminated - retrying".  Do I need to change the proxy settings? I know it has an option to at the start of all this, but wouldnt know what to put in there, as I have never had to do that before.

I am on a wireless network with a password, is that whats causing this - shouldnt be, as my laptop is connected just fine...  but Im running out of ideas.

I have vista on my laptop and am close to just getting another program to protect it... but will give this forum a shot first because Id really rather stay with avast if we can figure this out.

Here is the log I get after it errors out:

Looks like you are trying to use the on-line installation process and to be frank I really can't see the purpose of that and some people have experienced problems as you have. So I suggest downloading the full off-line installation file about 39MB.

Download the latest version of avast http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall. Ensure that you scroll down and select the avast direct download link for the English version and not Cnet as that is for an on-line installation (not what you want to do). - Direct download for avast Home, English version, http://files.avast.com/iavs4pro/setupeng.exe.

What ever you do don't try to download and install in a single process.

I believe you now need to do a clean reinstall, so after downloading the latest full off-line install version if you didn't save it (or tried to install in the same process), download this uninstall tool and follow the directions.

Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here and save it to your HDD.
  • 1. Now uninstall (using add remove programs, if you can't do that start from the next step), reboot.
  • 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility, reboot.  If step 1 failed it may be necessary to run this from safe mode, once complete reboot into normal mode.
  • 3. install the latest version, reboot.
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.2.6105 (build 24.2.8918.824) UI 1.0.799/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

OK, just got 88.1kb of 225kb copied before the avast uninstal utility you recomended stopped downloading too.... There has got to be something I am missing, something that is preventing me from downloading anytihng onto this laptop??? I am truly not this stupid and have downloaded this program onto computers for years without even the slightest problem.  I just cant see what the issue is so Im hoping you can  ;D thanks for trying to help!!

The download issue is not an issue within avasts control as it doesn't control the connection or the actual download; that is something either your browser or download manager (if you use one) controls. As you mention in the other topic, it isn't just a problem downloading avast files but others as well.

For the future it may be best to keep everything in the other topic, rather than flip flop between both.
