uninstall then reinstall

I am running vista home premium with windows defender, microsoft essentials, malwarebyte anti malware, advanced windows care, and have recently downloaded aswclear(to help me finish deleteing avast. But to no avail. I received a virus about a month ago and had avast, windows defender and advanced windows care. So I downloaded the microsoft security essentials to help. I have decided to go with avast again and keep my malwarebyte and windows defender. But I cannot finish uninstalling avast. I have the icon "a" with a red "not" sign through it. I have tried reinstalling avast but it will not let me. Error code 536870929. Can anyone help me? I have tried rebooting in safe mode but it still wont let me. Jan

What programs are you running or were you? I really liked Avast but had heard that Microsoft Security Essentials was a very good program as well, so I decided to try it after I got my virus. So I figured I didnt want 2 of them running together as I have hughes net for my internet provider.. Not as fast as most.

I have answered your other topic, it is best to stay in your own one, yes monitor other topics and see what is suggested but there is no need to also jump in.

First since your using Vista Home Premium, we will naturally assume that you are using avast Home and not the server version of avast (which forum you have posted).

Download the latest version of avast http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall. Ensure that you scroll down and select the avast direct download link for the English version and not Cnet as that is for an on-line installation (not what you want to do). - Direct download for avast Home, English version, http://files.avast.com/iavs4pro/setupeng.exe.

Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here and save it to your HDD.

• 1. Now uninstall (using add remove programs, if you can't do that start from the next step), reboot.
• 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility, reboot.  If step 1 failed it may be necessary to run this from safe mode, once complete reboot into normal mode.
• 3. install the latest version, reboot.

it wont let me download the aswclear.exe. because it says , avast is in protective mode .

Thanks so much. I finally got rid of my avast icon with the removal tool. I tried it again and I must've done something wrong in the safe mode before..
