Which is your operational system?
Mail program?
Do you use a firewall? Did you allow ashmaisv.exe to connect the Internet?

1) Remove NAV through Add/Remove programs from Control Panel. Boot.
2) Use Symantec removal tool (browse their site to get it, there are one for each antivirus series). Removing your Norton program using SymNRT.
3) Boot.
4) Install avast! Boot.
5) See what you get.

I am beginning to think we need a "sticky" at the top of the forum that is titled How To Remove Norton (with instructions, of course) as this seems to be one of the biggest problems people have when first trying avast!

Had a truck-load of problems a year or so ago when I removed NAV in favour of Avast, and not necessarily the ones you'd expect.   Problems with command prompt, DOS programs, all sorts.  It is a horrible thing to remove and at the time I didn't know there was a tool.  In the end, "CrapCleaner" and a couple of registry hacks I found listed did the trick and since then I've rebuilt the system a few times anyway.  One day I'll tell you the story of McAffee 4 and LSPFIX! ;-)

I have to say, Avast - while not always perfect because what is - is much safer and less aggro than some non-free competitors.  I won't swap in a hurry.
