avast! service stopped working ever since of avast! Free Anti-Virus 5

Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs >> Change/Remove >> Update >> Check for Updates >> Next.
Wait for the Installation to finish.
Click Finish.
Double-click on Avast icon.
Go to Summary. If Avast is not already activated, click on Fix It button and wait for a cupple sec.
Worked for WinXP Pro Version 2002 SP3.

I had the same problem, solved by correcting the installation of windows resources.

System - Windows Vista Ultimate SP-2--Avast5-Update-111101-0

Ok, I got the problem solved with letting the program fix itself. Took a bit, but it worked.
