Questions about version 4.5 of AVAST???
« on: June 21, 2004, 12:19:14 PM »
Does anyone know what new features will be in version 4.5 of AVAST? What improvements have been made? When will there be a BETA version to test? Last and certainly not least any idea when it will be realeased? Just curious by the way. Thanks again in advance.

OK, it's probably time to disclose some more info... ;)

Feature wise, it'll add the following (only most important news listed):

- New "Network Shield" resident provider module to directly block network worms like Blaster, Sasser etc...
- Support for new archives/unpackers
- Support for much more IM/P2P programs built into the IM/P2P providers
- New scanning "TCP daemon" for easier integration with third-party software (even you can write one :-))
- Silent mode in the Outlook/Exchange provider
- VRDB 2.0 (greatly enhanced healing success rate)

The program will probably also feature a new default skin and we'll likely have a new web site design...

About the schedule: since I said "July" (with no further details) you might've figured it will not be somewhere around the Independence Day but rather around the end of the month...

Hope this helps,
Vlk

Hey VLK,
It's radicalb21. First let me say thank you for disclosing some information on version 4.5 of AVAST. I do have one question could support be added for both Mozilla Firefox and Mozilla Thunderbird in AVAST version 4.5? Thanks again in advance.

What about the mail protection? Current does its job well, but some kind of low-level interception would be nice(most of peoples don't know how to set it correctly if the mail client isn't supported by Mail Protection Wizard). Any changes around this one?
Thx

What kind of support are you talking about, exactly? The Mail Protection Wizard will support Thunderbird (even the latest version) but that's about it...

Yes, but not before avast 5... FYI low-level (network level) mail scanning has its drawbacks, too... E.g. the inability to scan encrypted messages.

Can I ask you a favor?

Vlk, when you say a new website design you mean you will let YaBB behind? (Wilders has done it...).

Hm,but ashMaiSv.exe is not running as service as stated above.
Its initiated via Startup regstry section and is then resident in memory. Services are only for aswUpdSv and ashServ.exe.
I'll make a small test if i can use current ashMaiSv as service :)

Ok i just rtied and it was working ok. I suggest that you make services for ashDisp.exe and ashMaiSv.exe. There will be no need for extra registry entries in startup section and i'll have a better information control with AEC ;) Unless there is some problems with these two executables and Windows 9x based OS ?

ashMaiSv can be installed as a service - it's in the help file. I don't know if it has any advantages/disadvantages though. I guess the current state has a reason...

Ok ashDisp.exe cannot be used as a service, because its not working properly and "a" ball is not shown in trey either.
ashMaiSv worked fine. It would be just easier to monitor with AEC for now, nothing more i guess :)

ashMaiSv.exe makes good sense to run as service if you need to use it as a SMTP relay from other machines. The reason is that it will run even if no user is logged on...

Any disavantage in Win XP?  ::)
I'm guessing if I make it run like a Service too...
