Tried everything! Will BART work?
« on: January 21, 2010, 02:47:34 PM »
Hi,

A week ago I removed my Antivirus from my laptop. It was stupid ofcourse, but I thought I was save because I had already another installed.

For the first time in almost 3 years I saw the famous bleu screen, and ever since my computer won't start.
It runs as far as the BIOS.

I tried a lot in the meanwhile, and no program seams to boot my windows Vista.
It's my company laptop and can't afford losing my data.

Because I tried a lot and that didn't work. So I hope that BART work.
But if it doesn't work with BART it's a wast of money.

I'm trying to get the demoversion, but the link doesn't work anymore:

Quote
License:
Existing users can try this beta with the same license used for BART 2.0
If you don't have the license, you can ask for demo license here:
http://www.avast.com/eng/bart-demo-request.php

Is there a new link?

why dont try a linux live cd??
has more chance of getting to hookup an USB disk to copy your data to (try ubuntu or kubuntu)

I tried Ubuntu. And it tells me that the HD had too many many bad sectors. I haven't figured out yet if, and how I can get to my data.
Does anyone have a suggestion?

if you're ready to spend the bucks, this might help  ;D
http://www.ontrackdatarecovery.com/

assuming you'll install that on another system and create a data recovery boot CD with that  ;)
If a Linux live CD doesn't allow you to read the data (too many bad sectors), then you definitely need some good recovery software...how removing an anti-virus is related to the bad sectors on your hard disk you think ? :D

Hi, just a suggestion. :)
Do you have an external hd large enough to store a copy of the laptops hd? If you do why not make an image of the laptop hd and then mount the image on another computer and see if you can retrieve the data.

I would try Image for Dos http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/image-for-dos.htm, runs from cd, thumb drive, flash memory ect. They give a 30 day full trial.

Then download and install tbiview to view/extract files folders from image.http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/downloads/tbiview_en.zip

This may be an awkward way but I don't see the harm in trying.  :)  hope this helps

I already tried to make an image to an external HD. The only thing is that my external HD now isn't working anymore. Did the virus get my external HD as well?

come on, you have hardware issues, nothing to do with viruses  ::) (you talked about bad sectors right...) and may be something else is broken on this system, if you can't connect an external drive.

No, the thing is that I made an image to my external HD. But after a night sleep I saw that it would still take 550 hours before it would be completed, so I cancelled it. But when I tried to read it on another computer it wasn't working anymore. So it isn't a hardwarefailure.

I think that it is a virus, that now also took out my external HD

depending on how you made the image...

u probably have actual bad sectors on your harddisk that you tried to make an image from....

the way you made the image is important now here....
you say now you cannot read from the external disk anymore, sounds to me that instead of creating an image file you tried to mirror your defective disk onto your external disk, which could probably be solved by  (lowlevel) formatting the disk again

which program you used for imaging

nice  ;D but no thanks, a linux live CD is free and there are millions of flavors  ;) ...might be based off of Windows but I'll skip the 80$ offer  :D
