Updating from avast 4.8.1368 to avast 5.0
« on: January 23, 2010, 06:10:06 AM »
Hello,

I seem to be haing difficulties updating my current avast installation from 4.8.1368 to 5.0 via the menu "program update", I believe that the transition was to be smooth and that avast would update to the version 5.0 with a simple manual update... Could someone fill me in on whether this is the expected behavior, am I suppose to uninstall it first ? (I don't think so as it states on the support website:
"Is it required to uninstall avast! 4.x before installing avast! 5.0?
Yes, but there isn't necessary any user interaction to uninstall avast! 4.x, because installer of avast! 5.0 is able to detect previous instance of avast! 4.x and uninstall it automatically."

Am I suppose to download the uninstaller and then run it ?

And yes I know that it is being adressed Here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53910.0 but it does not update for me...

Thanks

You should be able to go to the avast web site and just download/install version 5 and it will install over 4.8 ... well, actually, it removes 4.8 while 5.0 is installing.

Actually, updating over the top of v4.8 could be a very bad idea.  That's what I initially did and subsequently every aspect of my PC's operations noticeably slowed (estimate by some 10-20% or more).  I then found this post - http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=54086.0 ... after using the utility to uninstall Avast!, and subsequently also cleaning the Registry of any references to Avast! and deleting the Avast! directory from c: drive (I am surprised at how much stuff the uninstall utility left behind), I then did a fresh install of Avast! v5.  All is now good, which leads me to postulate that something is maybe not quite right with the way the Avast! program went about the update process.

Looking through other posts from people apparently experiencing problems with the new v5, perhaps this is a general issue?   ;D

I think the big problem here is that the "upgrade" process is not doing what it's supposed to do, and in this case as said completely uninstall 4.8 before installing 5.0, as 5.0 isn't an update for 4.8, it's a completely new program. I think there should be a sticky on the forums and the web site to tell everyone that they should uninstall 4.8 manually, reboot and install 5.0 from scratch. It's a never ending story atm, with tens of posters experiencing tens of issues with the so called "upgrade" procedure. Also linking to http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility in that sticky would be a good idea  ;)

ps: I guess there's no prompt for a reboot when running the "upgrade" procedure, after V4 has been removed, and before 5.0 gets installed  ::)

I installed 5 over 4.8 with no problems (using the installer from download.com) and had no problems.  The only reboot prompt I got was after everything was done -- and by trial-and-error I found that it actually took 2 or 3 reboots before v5 was working properly.  Even then, I had to Repair to get auto-updates to work.

Judging from the number of threads in which various problems with v5 were fixed via Repair, I can't help but wonder if there aren't some bugs in the installer itself.

That wasn't the case for me, see image. Note it was me that selected Restart later, as I had a few things I wanted to finish before reboot.

I like the bit about thank you for your patience during the install, this was without doubt one of the fasted installs I have seen, certainly for a security program and one that is also performing an uninstall.

OK so that's what I said, you had a prompt to reboot when everything is finish, V4 removed and V5 installed. What I meant was a prompt between the two to avoid remnants of V4 (like some stuff can only be deleted at boot time) when installing V5.

No it is integrated, I can't recall if it actually mentioned it during the install, as I said it was extremely quick. The restart your computer was the first one I really noticed that I was quick enough to capture.
