Avast raping Firefox
« on: January 24, 2010, 02:02:53 AM »
Hello Forum,

Why is Avast Free 5.0.377 causing Firefox to freeze after a while?

Any thoughts? Would be interested to hear from other people experiencing a similar problem.

Cheers,

Not for me it isn't, lucky I guess.

Though you don't give too many secrets away, like exactly when it happens, what you are doing at the time and importantly was it like this with firefox 3.5.7 before you updated to 3.6 ?
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.2.6105 (build 24.2.8918.824) UI 1.0.799/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

Thanks for the replies.

Just regular browsing of the web. Emails and ordinary web surfing.

Firefox has been freezing up after the installation of Avast 5.0.377 and the upgrade to Firefox 3.6.

My RAM useage has actually decreased and Avast seems lighter on resources. Which makes me wonder what the fuck is causing this? LOL

Would appreciate any thoughts, comments or suggestions!

I had the slow connection (or pages not loading fully, or at all) and I traced it back to the 3rd party firewall.

If you have one, remove any old avast entries and on reboot it should ask for new rules when avast runs. Online armor will stop the avastui loading even if you set it to trust/allow until next boot.

Maybe this helps, maybe not.

Start Firefox in Safe mode and disable all add ons and then see if the same problems exist. I yes, post here again and give additional info if any. However, crashing FF can have many reasons. Bad websites, bad add-ons, number of open tabs. I have the identical OS & FF 3.6, and  some 10 enabled add ons and no problem (so far). :-)

I hope this helps.

One other suggestion, with the firewall, is to clean out any application rules for avast services from 4.8 which no longer exist, there were several of them.  Comodo, back when I used that, had a "purge" button which would automatically run through the list of permissions and delete any lines for which the corresponding application or service was no longer onboard.

The PC Tools one that I now use requires you to remove them manually and individually -- but if you untick that "hide uninstalled" thing, it'll flag each of those with a red X.

I recently had the same problem. I don't think it's just Firefox or a Firewall entry or entries.
I had to go back to Avast 4.8 and now I have normal surfing again.

The Avast 5 upgrade may be the cause from what I have experienced. Seems some others may
have similar problems, too.

Im not really a pro but i have plenty of knowledge in terms of software.

I have the same issue with yours.

What i did?

I just remove MBAM Pro.

And now Avast 5 is fully working!

Before complaining about Avast 5.

Look at you protection software?

You have plenty of it.

PC Tools, MBAM, Dr Web Anti Virus... ETC......

Try uninstall all your protection software except Avast 5.

If it has uninstall utility better use it.

It think Avast 5 now has a incompatibility with other protection software.

This is just my opinion but it works for my two computer.
Windows 11 Pro / Windows Defender/
Ryzen 5 1600/ Aorus Gtx 1080Ti Xtreme/ Gskill Trident Z RGB 3000/ Samsung Evo 250GB/ Western Digital Black 1 TB

Hello All,

Firstly, many thanks to you all for the replies. I have read them all.

Unfortunately I am not very tech-savvy so I have neither the knowledge nor the stamina to work my way to try all these solutions.

I can say however that I really appreciate the comments. In addition, I can say that I am not complaining :-)

I really like Avast! and am a loyal user. Indeed, I recommend it to all my friends and to anybody who will listen to me!

A perusal of numerous recent threads on the forum suggests that this is not an isolated problem. Many other users are experiencing the same issues.

I hope this issue is solved ASAP as I really want to start enjoying the full features of Avast!

Thank you again,

Avastfan1

If your RAM figures in your signature (265MB) are correct you are operating on an absolute bare minimum and everything on your system will suffer for it.
