It has been noted by quite a few users on these forums that the upgrade path from 4 to 5 isn't working anything like it should. It has been recommended that everybody uninstalls version 4 completely, using the cleaner tool if necessary, then installs version 5 from scratch.

Lets not lose sight of the fact that this is a support forum so those that don't experience problems are hardly likely to turn up and say they have no problems, so at times this can appear to be skewed. Whilst there is no doubt that people are having problems as they are posting, simply waiting for it to be fixed doesn't help much.

Where possible those that have had BSODs if they can upload the memory dump files giving the file a unique name (or email) it helps try to find the cause.

Upload them to ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming - Using Internet Explorer, Connect to the link and drag the file into the window and drop it, that starts the upload, you don't have read access to this folder.

Learn something new Everyday. It was Vik that told me to download and try .373 but he never mentioned sending him the dump files. DavidR thanks for telling me his email was there cause I hadn't noticed up to date.
Gizbar, thanks for the link but even the link causes me a crash and the windows memo that I have recovered from a serious error.
I saw mention that .377 was released now. I still don't think it should have been. Way to many BSOD listed on the board for the last 2 revisions to have been released.
I was even getting BSOD's after downloading a new program while I had 5.0.377 like everytime I added something new I would have to repair 377. HRBlock had a program called Cobalt or something like that which allowed you to back up files on the net. Downloaded that and .377 crashed. Point being , it is way to sensitive on XP3

I went the over-install route from 4.8 to 5 (free versions in both cases), and have had no system problems on my XP-SP3 (meaning primarily no BSODs, yet anyway).  One overall nuisance was that I had to reboot 2 or 3 times after the installation before some features (like for example the scan tab) became fully functional.  And it took a fair bit of playing around to get auto-updates to work properly -- thanks to David for noting that ticking the "dialup only" option seems to disable update checks regardless of your type of connection, unticking both choices fixed that beautifully.

"Pause provider" seemed to be missing, but you can now opt to "stop" a provider for a predetermined length of time, e.g. 10 minutes or 1 hour, and not even have to remember to re-enable it.  Or, of course, if you finish whatever else that required pausing it (in my case, moving large numbers of files) earlier, you can always restart it at any time.

On my system, at least, the only thing I can find that's not working is auto-updates to the program itself.  And I think it's been made pretty clear by the Alwil team that that's not a malfunction, they just haven't finished working on that yet.

There's only one feature of the former versions dropped from v5 that I miss, and of course if I can't see it for looking I'd be delighted to have someone steer me to it.  That's the warning logs/journals/whatever that were internal to avast.  Oh, and another one I just remembered -- that "click for details" thing on the auto-update notification popup.

Windows XP SP3. Avast 4.8 home  uninstalled through add/remove programs and Avast 5 free installed/rebooted and registered. Everything works like a charm. It is just a minor issue - if I manually resize AVAST window -make it smaller it takes its original size after few seconds after clicking on one of "cards". I can live with that though! Icon in system tray is a little bit ugly (I liked the old one) but it is question of taste - someone may find it nice. Thx Alvil!

The cleanup tool doesn't help a thing in this case. It all depends on whether you have software like PowerDVD installed that triggers the conflict.

Had same issue with resizing.  When I clicked on Summary after resizing, it would go back to the original larger size.  Resized again, closed the interface, restarted Windows, and the new resizing has been maintained since.  Evidently, not everything is written out to settings while the interface is open.

Its working on my system, having resized the window, used the old window trick of pressing the Ctrl key and the X (close window) button and my changes stuck.

Subsequently any changes I have made have been retained. I don't know if some of you experiencing this problem are running limited user accounts that may discard changes (I don't know for certain, worth checking).

I do know that some settings require Admin so it will be retained. See http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=54179.new;topicseen#new

.

Gideond. That is part of my missing puzzle. I have powerdvd loaded also. Explains where the driver conflict could be coming from
