blue screen of death
« on: January 26, 2010, 08:42:17 PM »
I have been getting the blue screen of death consistently, several times a day for the past few days, since I upgraded to Avast Internet Security 5.0 from whatever trial version they offered a month or two ago.

I submitted a trouble ticket to their support system 2 days ago ... and I attached 3 of my most recent minidump files for their review.

Much to my dismay, I have not received a response.

I downloaded BlueScreenView based on information I found in this forum, and see that Avast is causing many of the crashes.

Bug Check string: DRIVER_CORRUPTED_EXPOOL
Bug Check code: 0x100000c5
Caused by Driver: aswMon2.SYS
File Description:avast! File System Filter Driver for Windows XP
File version: 5.0.374.0

So at this point, what I want to do is uninstall this software which is obviously not working on my system, and for which I am not getting acceptable technical support.

My question is:  can I just use the Uninstall option that comes with the software?  or do I have to jump through hoops like Norton requires and use extra removal tools.  I would ultimately like to reinstall their free version.  I used it for a while and it was great.    (or I would like to get a fixed driver)

Please advise.

Also, who do I talk to about getting a refund?  I can't seem to get in touch with anyone!

Hi Sharon...

Are you referring to the free version of 4.8? If so, I'm not sure how much longer it will be supported, so it may not be worth it. :(

While I cannot advise you on getting a refund (you would need to contact Alwil using the "sales" address or number,) you can uninstall avast using this utility. This should ensure all the files and registry entries get cleaned up. :)

God bless :)
