Error: File is offline
« on: January 26, 2010, 01:20:36 PM »
I get the error: file is offline when it scans a php document. I don't see why it can't chek it for viruses. Any ideas?

I check some php files which used to be parts of wordpress theme, and I found no issue as you mention. It said "Scan Complete: NO THREAT FOUND".

Can you please post the full message? (including the file name/path)
Are you running an on-demand scan... or are you referring to resident shields?

I'm running a scheduled full system scan. It's rather annoying now as I have it set to shutdown but it won't because of the error. Here's the error:

Quote
Error: File is currently offline - it is currently not available. (42006)

All of the errors are that except with a different file path though they are all .php files

First of all - are you sure that it won't shut down because of that error? That message is about the same importance as "archive corrupted", for example... certainly not a reason for interrupting the scan (or subsequent actions).

As for the files - well, I think that your files simple are marked as offline (even though they're not). It's a special file attribute that says that the file is stored on a remote storage - and trying to access that file may take a lot of time. Therefore, it's recommended (by Microsoft) not to scan them.

You can put the line
ScanOfflineFiles=1
into the [Scanner] section of avast5.ini (in c:\Users\All Users\Alwil Software\Avast5)
- and the files will be scanned, regardless of their attributes.

:( Tried that but couldn't save it as avast is accessin it. I turned off all shields but it didn't help. Is safe mode the best option or can I get avast shut down somehow else?

Use notepad.exe to modify the INI file.

I did but it said I couldn't modify it as it was in use. Avast accessing it I'd guess

No, it's not a sharing violation - it's avast! self-defense preventing access to its file.
However, if the process accessing the INI file is NOTEPAD.EXE, you should see a (full-screen) question from avast! - asking whether the change is intentional.

Thanks heaps. I'll test the scan soon. It's because I used notepad++ instead of the standard notepad :( lol
