Avast! v.5 and win2k... detection problem
« on: January 27, 2010, 11:41:34 AM »
Hi, I’ve been using Avast! on my own computer for years, and I'm having no problems with the new v5. But I’ve just upgraded a very old computer for someone else from windows98 to windows2000 (it’s too old, too small, and too slow for XP, so I did an upgrade on the win98, not a clean install). Then I tried to install avast 5. But it refuses to install. It gives an error message saying that the minimum requirement is win2k. So obviously it’s not detecting the upgraded win2k install. Does anyobody have any ideas of how to get around this problem please? I’d really much prefer not to go to another a/v. Much thanks…

Hi Malle,

Sure your have the same problem with me,
avast 5.0 currently doesn't support for Win server yet, so you should use avast 4 server for Windows server.

This issue is what i fight for meanwhile other Av vendor has support for different platform of Windows based.

Do you have all the service packs installed (including the Update Rollup)?

@ Yanto.Chiang: Windows 2000 isn't a Windows server version of Windows  ::)

win2k updates from microsoft? No. I'm not able to get hold of a CD containing all those updates, and on my connection speed obtaining all that stuff from microsoft's US servers is pure fantasy... maybe if microsoft would allow local servers (lol). Isn't there any other way? One that cuts out dealing with microsoft servers?

yeah, there are some areas in the US and Europe where people are still stuck on dial-up, that's a real shame (administrations allowing that, companies not investing etc...)

Please don't forget about this one:

It's kinda like "SP5", but Microsoft didn't want to call it that way. However, it brings some new components.
